History:

With the exception of the Newburgh and Beacon areas, NY 52 east of Ellenville (US 209) follows its original alignment.

Early maps showed US 106 extending east to Ellenville. It is not known when it was truncated to Narrowsburg. But NY 52 was extended along the former US 106 alignment west to NY 97 in Narrowsburg. In 1973, US 106 was decommissioned altogether, and NY 52 was extended to the PA Line.

Before the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge opened to traffic in 1963, a ferry serviced NY 52 across the Hudson River. NY 52 followed Plank Rd. and South St. to the western terminal in Newburgh. From the eastern terminal at Riverfront Park in Beacon, NY 52 picked up Main St. (Current Business NY 52) and followed that east before rejoining the current alignment near Fishkill. NY 52 moved to its current alignment upon completion of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge.
