A NOTE REGARDING 900-SERIES ROUTES
900-series routes in New York State are reference routes (sometimes referred to as "secret routes"). They are state maintained roads that are not signed. Reference routes can be anything from a spur from one signed route to another to a major arterial or parkway.

A complete listing of active reference routes will be coming soon.

There are four reference routes that are erroneously signed as touring routes that are highlighted on this page.

History:

The Nassau Expressway was built in segments between the 1960's and 1990. In 1989, the Queens County section was given the I-878 designation while the Nassau County section was given the NY 878 designation. One year later, the Queens County section was reassigned as NY 878. The plan was for NY 878 to be one continuous route. However the terrain in the area makes any construction cost prohibitive. Engineers have been continuing to study ways to link the two segments together.
